Monty Python, Spamalot and the Life of… Bryan?

September 15, 2006

Dave Eggers covers the British debut of Spamalot with a hefty feature on Eric Idle and all things Python in the Guardian. Read it here.

Spamalot reworks the classic Monty Python and the Holy Grail as a musical. But it wasn’t the first Python movie adaptation. That honor (cough cough) goes to Monty Pyper’s Life of Bryan. Which bastardizes Monty Python’s Life of Brian for shits and giggles. Actually, it’s a drunken tribute to the classic movie that I filmed with some friends maybe six years ago, which has been languishing on a VHS tape till the advent of the YouTube. The original version was a little longer than the ten minute edit I posted on YouTube, mostly due to a series of flubbed takes. Maybe I’ll “restore some deleted footage” and post a special edition some day. Probably not, though. Tiny facts: Bryan (who plays Brian) had never seen the original movie, and was not encouraged to do so. Jamie Pyper, the narrator, is one of the greatest living Englishmen. And yes, I know the whole thing’s a bit rubbish…
