Stewart Lee on the role of blasphemy in comedy.

Stewart Lee is, perhaps, my favorite stand-up comedian. You can read his Wikipedia entry here.

(OK, I also heart Dylan Moran, but anyway….)

Among other things, Stewart wrote the lyrics to Jerry Springer: The Opera, performances of which (and a scheduled TV broadcast) resulted in death threats, angry mobs, Christian outrage. etc.

To cut to the chase, Stewart did a half hour special for Channel Five (I think) in the UK, on the role of blasphemy in comedy, comedy as cultural critique, religious intolerance etc. It has Alan Moore and some British MPs in it, and it’s well worth a look.

And looky here, here it is.
